Watercolors: Salinda and I paint with traditional watercolor materials, multiple brands of paint, brushes, paper and water. We prefer 140 lb. hot press paper with texture. We like Arches but often try alternatives. We've been gradually upgrading our brush quality to include Winsor and Newton Series 7 brushes. We mount our paper on portable boards for plein air use, but do not pre-soak or stretch the paper.
Cartooning: I attempted cartoon art for years using dip pens and cold press paper limited success. In 2015 I was introduced to the brush pen, and found that I could greatly improve the quality of my drawings. With the use of a scanner and Inkscape scaleable vector graphics editing software I could produce professional looking cartoons. In my present work, I no longer use ink. I draw directly on a Wacom tablet with a stylus. I use Clip Studio graphics software for drawing. I can vary line width by varying pressure to the stylus to produce hand a drawn ink appearance. Clip Studio is a fully integrated graphics program with multiple color palettes, a wide variety of brushes and pens, and many canvas and workspace options including animation and webtoon.
